Drexl Spivey was the secondary antagonist of the 1993 action-romance film True Romance, which is part of the Tarantinoverse. He served as the first antagonist of the movie, specifically for the first quarter of events in the scenario.

He was portrayed by Gary Oldman.

Biography[]

Drexl Spivey was presumably born in Detroit, Michigan; he falsely claims that his mother was Apache and comes to identify with the Afrocentric Rastafari movement, wearing his hair in dreadlocks, sporting gold teeth and speaking African-American Vernacular English (AAVE). Drexl became a pimp and drug dealer associated with a mobster named "Blue" Lou Boyle, and his subordinate, Vincenzo Coccotti. Assisted by his overweight bodyguard, Marty, he traffics drugs as a courier for the mafia, while pimping for his main income.

During the events of the film, Drexl is tasked by the mafia with stealing a large shipment of $500,000 to a drug dealer named Big Don and his associate, Floyd "D". Meeting the two gangsters at a hotel with Marty, he and Big Don have a raunchy conversation about "eating pussy" and Floyd "D" is being given a hard time cause he says "he don't eat pussy". Drexl then decides to give him a demonstration of what he meant, and shoots Big Don and Floyd "D" before he and Marty take the cocaine.

Drexl takes in a young woman named Alabama Whitman, a girl from Tallahassee, Florida who came to Detroit to get away from her home. She works for him for him for 3 days, and disappears. Soon afterward, Alabama's new husband, Clarence Worley, shows up at Drexl's nigthclub and says that she will not be working for him anymore. Drexl demands to compensated for his time and "peace of mind". Clarence hands him an envelope that he says contains what Drexl's "peace of mind" is worth, "and not a penny more"; the envelope is empty.

Enraged, Drexl throws his Chinese food tray at Clarence and they fight, Drexl getting the upper hand with the help of Marty and savagely beats up Clarence some. The pimp then gets Clarence's wallet, sees his address and has Marty go bring Alabama back to him. However, while Drexl was asking Marty what is taking him so long, Clarence pulls out a gun when Drexl's head is turned the other way and shoots the nefarious man in the crotch before killing Marty. Clarence, pissed off, makes Drexl look at him before finishing him off with another gunshot to the head. The store clerk then makes one of the hookers get Alabama's belongings. She gives him a suitcase, Clarence not knowing till he got home that is was full of cocaine, setting the rest of the story in motion.

Personality[]

Drexl was a ruthless individual as shown by his scarred face and one dead eye. He was known for his temper and has been known to beat some of his women when they piss him off.

Trivia[]

  • Screenwriter Quentin Tarantino originally wrote the character of Drexl with the intention of playing the pimp himself.[1]
  • Gary Oldman created himself the iconic look of Drexl, having been to the dentist to get the character's gold teeth, used the wonky eye prop he used when he played the title character in Bram Stoker's Dracula, and it was also his idea for Drexl to have dreadlocks as part of his costume.[2]
